The GUT CLUB takes magnesium seriously, and from a microbiota-gut-centric view. Looking at magnesium through this lens inspires magnesium supplementation, as if it weren’t already a no-brainer based on enzyme activation alone!
We can all benefit through magnesium supplementation, especially to guard against deficiency. After all, bacteria also require magnesium, collecting it using their own pumps. We share the pool of nutrients with gut microbiota, and they prepare many for our optimal absorption.
Magnesium bound to glycine offers many benefits. Among them is the fact that beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus show preference to glycine (as opposed to taurine) in processing our bile acids/bile salts!

We’ve been steadily collecting magnesium research in several photo explorations of our main Facebook page, here’s the first, please click on the photo of crystalized magnesium:
A few healthful nuggets about magnesium:
-predominantly absorbed throughout the small intestine
–reduces toxicity of LPS (lipopolysaccharide product of gram-negative bacteria), protecting mitochondria and even placenta and maternal-fetal interface as well as the heart! Deficiency heightens LPS-induced inflammation. Magnesium was found to enhance “LPS tolerance by downregulating nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB)” which would otherwise lead to production of inflammatory cytokines, among other mechanisms. (2023)
–inhibits binding of pathogenic microbiota
-may guard against microbial overgrowth via enzyme activation, improving digestion
–prebiotics were found to increase magnesium absorption 23%, perhaps due to short chain fatty acid production.
–probiotics found to increase magnesium absorption in bone, 2021, and skeletal health
-required to process glucose to stabilize blood sugar, improving insulin sensitivity and possibly reducing risk of diabetes
-may positively impact tryptophan levels
-may enhance diversity of gut microbiota
–reduces arthritis via the microbiome regulating immune cells (Treg)
-enhanced production of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) by microbial fermentation
-Inversely associated with NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease)
-Regulates antiviral immunity, including via interferon response via vitamin D; deficiency compromises vitamin D
-Crosstalk with lipids; may prevent hyperlipidemia in hypertension
-Cofactor in tryptophan synthesis and conversion to serotonin, as well as vitamin K
“Another pathway influenced by Mg is the serotoninergic system. Mg acts like a cofactor for tryptophan hydroxylase, intervenes in serotonin receptor binding in vitro and exhibits a direct enhancing effect on 5-HT1A serotonin receptor transmission”
-Hypothesis: may contribute to the magnetic and electrical function in the body in conjunction with iron, including blood flow and interorgan transport via microbiota (as well as our planet’s magnetic field!)
Magnesium attenuated rheumatoid arthritis via gut microbiota, 2023:
Chlorophyll is the ‘blood’ of plants, like human blood, but with magnesium at the center instead of iron, a good reason to consume high-dose greens (we love arugula):
