Layer Origin HMO (Human Milk Oligosaccharide)

The GUT CLUB is a proud affiliate of HMO products of Layer Origin, offering a 10% discount using code TheGutClubCode.

HMOs present both children and adults with an opportunity to remodel their microbial balance for improved function and immunity. This is a very well-studied, crucial area of research. Scientists have been sounding the alarm that over the past century there has been a reduction in Bifidobacteria of the infant gut, leading to a rise in pH, allowing pathogenic overgrowth. Perhaps this is due to the rise of industrial society, including use of agrochemicals where Bifidobacteria were found most sensitive to glyphosate.

Did you know up to 90% of the healthy breastfed infant gut is Bifidobacteria? And why are Bifidobacteria so important? The GUT CLUB has been educating our members about Bifidobacteria since we began our mission toward microbial balance.

Note: PureHMO™ is made via fermentation, not isolated from human milk, and is very pure.

We like to refer to Bifidobacteria as The Rolls Royce of the Microbiome™.

And Lactobacilli as The Lamborghinis of the Microbiome™.

Reasons are many-fold:

  • Producing lactate and acetate to cross-feed butyrate-producers where butyrate runs the show, i.e., signaling mopping-up oxygen to reduce aerobic pathogens
  • Lowering pH for improved nutrient absorption and reduced pathogenic growth
  • Control of fungi via immune response
  • Raised oxytocin receptors of the brain for improved immunity and social interaction
  • Gut-brain axis, gut-lung axis, gut-skin axis, gut-liver axis, gut-heart axis, gut-eye axis, gut-lymph axis, gut-bone axis (you get the idea; health begins in the gut)

Not only are they prebiotic to Bifidobacteria, HMOs are also known to be utilized by our Bacteroides, which are crucial immune-modulating gut bacteria. Bacteroides can be obliterated by antibiotics used at birth per research. While B. fragilis was found to attenuate autistic symptoms in other research. Dietary prebiotics found to raise Bacteroides also synergistically raised butyrate-producers via immune response.

Who would have thought HMOs can raise butyrate? It’s about cross-feeding!

Amazing how the major phyla, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, can impact one another. This is the big picture of microbial balance from perspective of bacteria. Throw in fungi, protozoans, archaeans and viruses, including bacteriophages, and the possibilities appear endless.

Please note this interesting 2020 research about raised Akkermansia:
The Protective Effects of 2’-Fucosyllactose Against E. Coli O157 Infection Are Mediated by the Regulation of Gut Microbiota and the Inhibition of Pathogen Adhesion

“Studies have indicated that Akkermansia spp. proliferates by utilizing 2’-FL, which is consistent with our results [58]. A 15-fold increase and 26.4% proportion at genus level showed the absolute predominance of Akkermansia in the FL group compared with the CK group.”

“the explosion in Akkermansia spp. proliferation and whether, after cessation of 2’-FL supplementation, the overwhelming amount of Akkermansia spp. would lead to adverse effects still requires further investigation. In conclusion, we believe that the protective effect of 2’-FL is mediated by the specific proliferation of Akkermansia spp. (Figure 7).”

Quite a product line here. The one applied to gut-skin axis includes hyaluronic acid (HA), where HA is also about intestinal health per much research. Quite progressive! PureHMO™ is made via fermentation, not isolated from human milk, and is very pure, offered in different flavors (flavored with real superfoods, wheatgrass and strawberry/raspberry).

Here’s an exploration about combining HMOs with Bifidobacteria probiotics as synbiotic form of gut bioremediation:
