HOLOIMMUNE™ Paraprobiotic

Welcome to the new world of heat-killed probiotics, known as paraprobiotics.
Even dead bacteria can be good bacteria! Let’s explore potential mechanisms.

Paraprobiotics are defined as inactivated, non-viable microbial cells or cell fractions to confer a health benefit.

Perhaps in a sensitive gut, paraprobiotics may provide a safer opportunity to reduce inflammation. Some individuals have difficulty tolerating traditional live probiotics.

But how, and where can paraprobiotics conduct their magic? Let’s go to Peyer’s patches of the small intestine where immune cells are born and microbiota educate the immune system.

In the chart above, we see how a heat-killed paraprobiotic can be recognized by dendritic cells producing cytokines which induce T cells, including T-helper cells, also known as CD4+ cells. This can then lead to IgA production where such immunomodulation can balance flora for overall improved metabolism.

“Microfold cells (M cells) within the Peyer’s patches are the initial point of contact between paraprobiotics and the immune system”

But there’s more. Our Peyer’s patches are intimately associated with nerve fibers and bundles including vagal afferents, a direct connection to the brain:

Can paraprobiotics stimulate the vagus nerve for improved vagal tone? Here may unfold the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

Differences were found in how a paraprobiotic can affect the vagus nerve and brain regions when compared to live probiotics:
“While a single exposure to live and heat-killed bacteria altered vagal activity, only live treatment induced rapid neural activation in widespread but distinct brain regions”
“Within minutes of application to a jejunal segment, live and heat-killed bacteria increased the firing frequency of vagal fibres”
Note: In this particular research, a heat-killed probiotic was found to affect a region of the brain called the paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (PVT), an important center regulating emotions and behavior.

Holoimmune also contains Beta-Glucans, known as anti-inflammatory prebiotics associated with improved immune function:
