But why is butyrate important? And what makes tributyrin different?

The short answer is our general health literally depends on an ample supply of butyrate. In many ways, it runs the show. The importance of butyrate cannot be overestimated.

Butyrate is a crucial short chain fatty acid (SCFA) produced by certain gut microbiota when we consume fiber. It is mainly produced by our gram-positive gut bacteria within the Firmicutes phylum. If you must know, Clostridial clusters IV and XIVa.

Butyrate is used by the cells of our intestinal lining, called colonocytes. The butyrate signals these cells to mop up oxygen. This means there is a limited supply of oxygen available to aerobic bacteria such as pathogenic Proteobacteria. Proteobacteria have important purpose, but when they are overgrown, as microbial DNA stool testing can reveal, they can cause chronic disease.

Butyrate is also required for a healthy gut-skin axis regarding things like eczema.

Butyrate is also a crucial factor in preventing severe respiratory illness, helping to block an inflammatory response via Treg cell activation.
The SCFA butyrate is also responsible for regulating our genes. As an HDAC inhibitor, it guards against genetic mutation, infection and cancer.
Genetic expression. That’s a pretty big deal!

Tributyrin is a rapidly absorbed type of butyrate. Technically, tributyrin is a triglyceride analogue of butyrate that is metabolized to butyrate by pancreatic lipases, helping with the following:

Butyrate is also found to slow the aging process.

Butyrate is also a main factor in the success of fecal microbiota transplant. (FMT). Butyrate-producing Clostridia contribute to successful FMT.

Tributyrin has been studied for many decades, but is fairly new on the market. One profound 2018 paper illustrated how tributyrin may prevent heart disease (atherosclerosis) in a mouse model.

Recent research reveals the active form of vitamin D appears remarkably dependent on butyrate-producers! Given the importance of vitamin D, that’s a pretty huge finding, wouldn’t you say?

As with anything newly added to your supplement protocol, it’s best to begin with small doses.
